Science fiction, at its best, is always forward looking, always looking for the next groundbreaking story to tell. The best sci-fi film of 2018 is shaping up to be a wild and terrifying race filled with mutant demon bears and potential government cover-up. No it is not Solo: A Star Wars Story.
On Wednesday, the world finally got a full-length trailer for Annihilation, an upcoming science fiction film by Ex Machina director Alex Garland. Based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer, Annihilation tells the story of a group of four female scientists who travel through a mysterious place known only as “Zone X”. Blocked from the rest of the world by a strange barrier, Zone X is a growing psychological nightmare, threatening to engulf cities.
Scientists – biologist (Natalie Portman), surveyor (Tessa Thompson), psychologist (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and anthropologist Anya Thorensen (Gina Rodriguez) – make their way through the barrier and into Zone X in knowing they might not come back.
From this new trailer, Garland’s Annihilation seems to stray a bit from the book, which is a good choice. Annihilation is VanderMeer’s first book South scope trilogy and Garland has stated that he has no plans to continue the story after the first film. So things have to end in the movie a little cleaner than in the book.
Here is the official synopsis of Annihilation:
A biologist searches for her missing husband on an expedition with a secret agency and discovers a dangerous creature lurking in the wild.
If you’ve read VanderMeer’s novel, you understand that this film will most likely be an epic adventure full of unexpected twists and turns. And the film seems even more intense than the book.
Annihilation premieres in theaters on February 23, 2018.
