Denis Villeneuve de Dune sets his sights on his next science fiction film

After adapting a sci-fi monster for the big screen – Frank Herbert’s Dune – French-Canadian director Denis Villeneuve has set his sights on his next ambitious sci-fi adaptation – Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama.

Arthur C. Clarke is one of the best-known science fiction writers, but although he co-wrote the 2001 screenplay: A Space Odyssey with Stanley Kubrick, there was no high-level or big-budget film adaptation of his other novels or stories.

In the ’80s and’ 90s, video games were created based on Rendezvous with Rama, but although Morgan Freeman and David Fincher expressed interest in a film adaptation, it never took off. Freeman will always be involved in Villeneuve’s version, as a producer.

Villeneuve’s adaptation has yet to be quite a long way off, as he’s currently busy pre-producing Dune – Part Two, which apparently won’t start filming until the summer of 2022.

Villeneuve’s previous sci-fi films include A24’s Enemy, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Arrival starring Amy Adams and Blade Runner 2049, starring Ryan Gosling and a returning Harrison Ford as Deckard.

First published in 1973 (only 5 years after the 2001 release), the novel is considered a foundational science fiction text. Set in the 2130s, the story involves a huge alien ship entering the solar system. The story is told from the perspective of a group of human explorers who intercept the ship in an attempt to unravel its mysteries.

Dune was a box office hit, although it was released on HBO Max the same day it hit theaters, and Dune Part Two just might get bigger.

It looks like Villeneuve wants to stay in the sci-fi blockbuster realm for a while and his next one will be eagerly awaited.
